Jack seems to have become much more relaxed, probably because he has almost achieved his aim of become undisputed leader of the other boys. To emphasise his new power and importance he is seated on a great log which has been dragged into place for this purpose.

Jack wears paint and is garlanded like a primitive idol and is surrounded by offerings of food and drink. His tribe seem relaxed too, happy to trade their independence for the security and protection of belonging to an 'armed' tribe.

Jack is happy to dispute Ralph's claim to leadership openly, in the knowledge that he has already won the support of most of the other boys and those who haven't yet joined Jack's tribe are persuaded to do so by the offer of food and protection coupled with the obvious inability of Ralph and Piggy to prevent them from doing so.

Even the arrival of the storm fails to shatter the bond formed between Jack and his tribe. Jack's simply order to 'do our dance' and the boys' blind faith in his leadership is sufficient to hold the tribe together.
